Abbott Ice and Packing Plant Meat Hook

Abbott Ice and Packing Plant Meat Hook
Meat Hook from the Abbott Ice and Packing Plant, 6" wide by 8 1/2" long. Donley Collection. Inherited by Harold and Janice Donley when Rose passed away in 1974. Margorie Arnett, who as a child often visited her father at Farmer Peet's Meat Packing Plant in Michigan, said that these meat hooks were used to move and position large pieces of meat. An experienced meat handler would hold the handle in the palm of his hand with the hook lying back along the back of his wrist. Whenever he needed to reposition the piece of meat he was working on, he would flip his wrist, bringing the hook around with great force into the meat. After positioning the meat, he would flip the hook back over the back of his wrist and continue working. See the Abbott Ice and Packing Plant Story.
